Original Melody Maker Magazine dated 19 July 1997, with The Charlatans as the main front-cover feature.

The cover is dominated by a large photograph of Tim Burgess, with the bold headline:

“THE CHARLATANS”

and the accompanying lines:

“Flame! We’re gonna live forever!”

and

“Get fired up for Phoenix”

This gives the issue strong appeal for collectors of The Charlatans, Tim Burgess, Britpop, indie music and 1990s Melody Maker memorabilia.

The cover also promotes several other major contemporary features, including:

  • Oasis – a prominent cover reference
  • Dubstar
  • Paul Weller
  • Ocean Colour Scene
  • Kula Shaker
  • Teenage Fanclub
  • T in the Park coverage
  • Gay Pride feature
  • Dannii Minogue
  • Vasser Arafat
  • Mikhail Gorbachev
  • Chekov from Star Trek
  • Barbara Windsor
  • Queen Victoria

The cover’s lower section promotes:

“MUSIC FOR THE UNITED GENERATION!”

with Kula Shaker, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and others tied to T in the Park coverage, making the issue a good snapshot of the major UK festival and Britpop scene of summer 1997.

The Charlatans / Phoenix angle is especially notable, with the cover clearly positioning the band around that year’s festival circuit.

Condition

Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age-related handling and storage wear.

The front cover shows light to moderate creasing, surface waviness and general handling wear, particularly around the outer margins.

The top edge shows some mild bending and waviness, while the right-hand edge appears slightly uneven with light roughness consistent with thin paper stock.

The left-hand edge/spine area shows minor compression and handling creases.

The bottom edge has some light waviness and wear, with the lower corners softened from age and storage.

There is some age-related toning/discolouration to the pale border areas, together with minor marks and general surface wear.

The main cover image and printed text remain clear and readable.

No obvious major tears, heavy staining or writing are visible in the supplied photograph.

Condition assessment is based on the single supplied image, so the interior pages and back cover cannot be fully assessed.
