Original Empire Magazine – May 1991, featuring a striking The Doors / Jim Morrison themed cover and a major feature on Oliver Stone’s film The Doors.

Date: May 1991
Original UK cover price: £1.85

The front cover is dominated by the distinctive flame-effect portrait artwork associated with Jim Morrison / The Doors, with the main headline:

“THE DOORS – Oliver Stone on Sex, Drugs and Movie-Making”

This makes the issue particularly appealing to collectors of The Doors, Jim Morrison, Oliver Stone, classic rock cinema and early Empire Magazine issues.

Other clearly advertised content includes Julia Roberts, with a feature connected to Sleeping with the Enemy, plus coverage of Hamlet, the troubled production of The Bonfire of the Vanities, and a behind-the-scenes look at the Oscars.

The cover also promotes Empire’s regular film-review content, describing the magazine as “The Monthly Guide To The Movies” and advertising reviews and ratings of contemporary films and videos.

Main Cover Features

  • The Doors – major cover story
  • Oliver Stone discussing the making of The Doors
  • Jim Morrison imagery dominating the front cover
  • Julia Roberts feature
  • Sleeping with the Enemy
  • The Bonfire of the Vanities – “What Went Wrong?”
  • Hamlet
  • Backstage at the Oscars
  • Contemporary movie and video reviews and ratings

This is a particularly nice piece of early-1990s film-magazine history and would suit collectors of Empire, movie memorabilia, The Doors, Jim Morrison and Oliver Stone.

Condition

Pre-owned vintage magazine with noticeable age and handling wear.

Visible from the supplied photograph:

  • General surface rubbing and scuffing across the front cover
  • Noticeable edge wear, particularly along the right side and lower edge
  • Some corner wear and softening
  • Small creases and handling marks
  • Visible rubbing/abrasion around the lower-right area of the cover
  • Light age-related discolouration and marks consistent with a magazine from 1991
  • Spine appears intact from the visible angle
  • No major front-cover tear is obvious in the supplied image

The magazine is therefore best considered a used vintage copy with visible age-related wear rather than a high-grade example.

Please inspect the supplied photograph carefully, as it forms an important part of the condition description.

The front cover advertises a “FREE! Another Classic 24-Page Photo Book Inside.”
